Understanding the Role of the Bureau of Postsecondary Education
The Bureau of Postsecondary Education (BPE) is an organization within the U.S. Department of Education that provides leadership and coordinates programs in support of access to quality postsecondary education. The Bureau also promotes continuous improvement of postsecondary education in the United States.
The mission of the BPE is to promote access to quality postsecondary education and to ensure its continuous improvement. The Bureau does this by providing leadership and coordination for federal programs; collecting, analyzing, and disseminating data on postsecondary education; and conducting research on effective practices in postsecondary education.
The vision of the BPE is to ensure that all individuals have the opportunity to enroll in and complete high-quality postsecondary programs that lead to rewarding careers and citizenship.
The BPE has four strategic goals:
1. Increase access to postsecondary education
2. Improve the quality of postsecondary education
3. Promote the responsible use of federal resources
4. Foster innovation and improve efficiency
The BPE is responsible for administering the following federal programs:
1. The Federal TRIO Programs – Upward Bound, Talent Search, Student Support Services, and Educational Opportunity Centers
2. The Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP)
3. The Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) program
4. The Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program
5. The Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program
6. The Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program (MSEIP)
7. The Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement program
8. The Strengthening Institutions Program
9. The Teacher Quality Partnership program
10. The TRIO Training program
11. The Upward Bound Math-Science program
